Settle Mat Training for Dogs - A How-To Guide
Firstly, lets start with the question: What is a settle mat anyway?!
Think of a settle mat as your dog's very own "chill zone." It's like a yoga mat, a favourite chair, and a security blanket all rolled into one.
A settle mat isn’t just a comfy spot to snooze on (though your dog will become a professional napper). It’s a portable peace zone, a magic rectangle that says, “Hey, relax right here.” Whether you're sipping tea in your favourite café, on that all-important work call, or wrangling the chaos of dinnertime, your pup can learn that this special mat means it's time to settle down and just... be.
So why do I need a settle mat?
Your dog will lie down here, there and just about anywhere. Having a special mat that you can carry everywhere helps your dog to recognize this spot means “relax, recharge, and do nothing heroic for a while.” It becomes a familiar comfy spot wherever you go—a cosy constant in a world full of squirrels and distractions.
Over time, that mat becomes a gentle signal: "You’re safe here. You can rest now." And once your pup gets the hang of it, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
So how do I train my dog to settle?
1. Introduce the Mat
Place the mat on the floor and let your dog explore. When they show interest—be it a sniff or a paw—gently say "Yes" and place a treat on the mat. This positive association makes the mat a delightful discovery.
Tip: Keep sessions short and sweet. Repeat this a few times to build excitement.
2. Encourage Full Engagement
As your dog becomes curious, wait for them to place all four paws on the mat. Reward this with a treat on the mat.
Tip: If your dog hesitates, sprinkle a few treats on the mat to entice them.
3. Promote a Down Position
Once your dog is comfortably standing on the mat, wait for them to sit or lie down. If they don't, gently guide them into a down position using a treat. Reward them once they're lying down.
Tip: If your dog’s standing there like, “Uh… now what?” try sitting beside the mat yourself (bonus points for pretending you’re about to lie down).
4. Build Duration
Now, encourage your dog to stay on the mat for longer periods. Start by rewarding them every few seconds, then gradually increase the time between treats.
Tip: Use a calm, soothing voice to reinforce the peaceful environment.
5. Introduce a Cue Word
Choose a word like "Settle" or "Chill" to signal your dog to go to the mat. Say the cue as you place the mat down. Over time, your dog will associate the word with the action.
Tip: Consistency is key. Use the same cue each time to reinforce the behaviour. Using the same mat can have its benefits too.
6. Add Gentle Distractions
Once your dog reliably settles on the mat, introduce mild distractions—like moving around the room or making soft noises. Reward them for staying put. This step is similar to testing the durability of your sewn items, ensuring they hold up under different conditions.
Tip: Gradually increase the level of distraction as your dog becomes more comfortable.
So there you have it! A how-to (make your life easier) guide. You absolutely will not regret training your dog to settle. Whether your pup is a puppy or an older dog, the settle command can save you from many stressful situations in the house, or out and about.
